To check gear adjustment, shift to gear four and tilt the bike over (or turn it upside down) until you can see the two red or yellow dots on the gear mechanism. These should be lined up. If they aren’t, screw the cable barrel adjuster in or out until they are.

Adjusting the brakes, replacing pads

Properly adjusted and with pads in good condition, your bike brakes will stop you safely and reliably, on wet roads or dry. As with general maintenance, they will need more frequent attention on a mountain bike that sees a lot of off-road use.

If the brake levers need pulling too far before the brakes start working, then the brakes need adjusting – if the levers can be pulled very close to the handlebars, the need is urgent. Also, if the pads are binding – rubbing on the wheel rim when the brakes are off – this too needs attention, as it makes the bike hard work to ride. If the brakes make a graunching noise when used, then there’s probably grit trapped between the pad and rim – remove the pads and clean both them and the rims in soapy water. If the trouble persists, replace the pads.
